Most fully automatic weapons manufactured and registered before May, 1986 may be owned and sold to individuals. If you don't the price will only be higher when you do. Laws that went into effect in May, 1986 made it illegal for 'civilians' to own fully automatic firearms that were manufactured after that date. Nevermind the fact that even the most clueless of individuals can see that these example Thompsons were made in the US and should be legally registered since they were made in the US prior to 1986's cutoff that doesn't matter to the ATFE.Īnyway, before I go off on a tangent - I can feel my anger rising - I will say this: If you want one, buy it now.

USC 922(o) forbids it of course, new MGs can be made for the Govt or LE, since they are better than your normal citizen.Īnd even if you found a warehouse full of WWII era Thompsons somewhere in the Philipines or Germany or wherever, you would not be able to import them back into the US as normal 'transferable' MGs they would either have to be torch cut (3 times through the receiver) and then sold as parts kits or you might be able to import some as dealer samples for a limited time. Now for the rub in the US is this: MGs are legal, but new ones have not been made for the civilian market since May 19, 1986. The Brits destroyed all kinds of stuff that was used in WWII as a 'public safety' measure. Most of it has been either been resold by now or been destroyed. True, you'd think there is a lot of war surplus out there.

Here's what I don't get though: you can buy ex-servicemen's WWII era rifles relatively cheaply, so why not SMGs? Is it purely because there were a lot less of them made than rifles like the Garand, etc.? I mean if all you have to do is jump through a few hoops and pay a $200 fee it doesn't seem like that alone should inflate the price into the five-figure range.

Even if you can get the license, it's not exactly easy to find what you want.
